This unit extends the work that was done in Kindergarten using direct comparison. Students in Grade 1 should carefully consider all endpoints when appropriate. In situations where direct comparison is not possible, students should be able to use indirect comparison and explanations that draw on transitivity. Students move from directly comparing objects to indirectly comparing objects, and ordering objects by measurement length, which involves assigning a number to a length. Students use manipulative units that have a standard unit of length, such as centimeter cubes or inch manipulatives end-to-end and count them to measure a length. Through numerous experiences and careful questioning by the teacher, students will recognize the importance of careful measuring so that there are not any gaps or overlaps in order to get an accurate measurement. This concept is a foundational building block for the concept of area in Grade 3.
A question is essential when it stimulates multi-layered inquiry, provokes deep thought and lively discussion, requires students to consider alternatives and justify their reasoning, encourges re-thinking of big ideas, makes meaningful connections with prior learning, and provides students with opportunities to apply problem-solving skills to authentic situations.

Ordering and Comparing Objects Using a Third Object

Using hands-on activities and concrete manipulatives, student will understand that the length is the distance measured from one end point to another end point, that the distance between the two end points is the length, and that both the length and the width are measurements of length.

How Do They Compare

Using snap cubes or paperclips as length units of measure, students will measure and record the length of various items in the room. They will compare their measurements to those of their classmates and explain why their measurement is accurate.
