Prekindergarten: Unit PK.MD.B.3-4, Sort objects into given categories and compare quantities

Lesson Plan B3: Sorting Objects

Essential Questions: Question

  • How do I decide which attribute to use when sorting objects.
  • Why is data collected and analyzed?
  • How do people use data to influence others?
  • How can predictions be made based on data?

Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery..

    Content/Grade Level
    Math: Prekindergarten
    Domain: PK.MD Measurement and Data
Unit/Cluster: PK.MD.B. Sort objects into categories and compare quantities.

    Enduring Understandings: Question

    1. The way that data is collected, organized and displayed influences interpretation.
    2. Grouping is a way to count, measure, and estimate.
    3. Objects can be sorted based on common attributes.

    Essential Questions: Question

    1. How did you sort your objects?
    2. What categories did you form?
    3. How does the quantity in one category compare to the quantity in another?
    4. How do you decide which attribute to use when sorting objects.
    5. Why is data collected and analyzed?
    6. How do people use data to influence others?
    7. How can predictions be made based on data?

    Standards Addressed in This Lesson:

    1. PK.MD.B.3 Sort objects into self-selected and given categories.
    2. PK.MD.B.4 Compare categories using words such as more or same.

It is critical that the Standards for Mathematical Practice are incorporated in ALL lesson activities throughout the unit as appropriate. It is not the expectation that all eight Mathematical Practices will be evident in every lesson. The Standards for Mathematical Practice make an excellent framework on which to plan your instruction. Look for the infusion of the Mathematical Practices throughout this unit.

    Lesson Topic:
Sort objects into categories and compare quantities

    Relevance/Connections

    1. PK.CC.B.5 Represent a number (0-5, then to 10) by producing a set of objects with concrete materials, pictures, and/or numerals (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
    2. PK.CC.B.6 Recognize the number of objects in a set without counting (Subitizing). (Use 1-5 objects.)
    3. PK.CC.C.7 Explore relationships by comparing groups of objects up to 5 and then 10. Identify whether the number of objects I one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies (includes groups with up to 5 objects)

    Student Outcomes:

    The student will:

    1. Sort objects by common attributes into different groups.
    2. Organize the sorted categories of objects by lining up to tell which has more or the same number of objects in each category.
    3. Compare the groups of objects to tell which has more or are equal.
    4. Explain how they know which category has more or is equal

Prior Knowledge Needed to Support This Learning

    Possible Prior Experiences:
    1. PK. CC.A.1 Count verbally to 10 by ones.
    2. PK.CC.A.2 Recognize the concept of just after or just before a given number in the counting sequence up to 10.
    3. PK.CC.A.3 Identify written numerals 0-10.
    4. Pk.CC.B.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities to 5, then to 10; connect counting to cardinality

Method for determining student readiness for the lesson:

All students will participate since this is a readiness activity.
