    Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.

    Domain: Geometry

    Unit/Cluster: Identify and describe two-dimensional shapes (circles, triangles, rectangles; including a square which is a special rectangle.)
    Standard(s):
    PK.G.A.1: Match like (congruent and similar) shapes.
    PK.G.A.2: Group the shapes by attributes.

    Purpose/Big Idea: Students will identify and describe two-dimensional shapes and match similar shapes when given various two-dimensional shapes. Students will also be able to explain the groupings made when sorting.

    Materials:

    1. Muffin Tin
    2. Shapes (circle, square, rectangle, and triangle) in a variety of materials such as large buttons; foam shapes; small, cardboard cutouts of shapes (note: use variety of triangles such as isosceles, equilateral, and scalene), etc.
    3. Shape Stickers or Pictures (Run on Label Sheets to make the stickers)

    Activity:

    1. Label front of muffin tin with pictures or stickers of shapes.
    2. Direct students to put like shapes together in the muffin tin according to the labels.
    3. Observe students and ask guiding questions.

    Guiding Questions:

    1. Why did you put this shape here?
    2. Why can’t you put this shape over here?
    3. How many sides does this shape have?
    4. If I turn this picture like this, does it change the shape?

    For observation:
    Can students correctly match like shapes regardless of color or material?
