    Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.

    Domain: Geometry

    Unit/Cluster: Identify and describe two-dimensional shapes (circles, triangles, rectangles; including a square which is a special rectangle.)
    Standard(s):
    PK.G.A.1: Match like (congruent and similar) shapes.
    PK.G.A.2: Group the shapes by attributes.

    Purpose/Big Idea: To give students multiple and varied opportunities to create shapes, identify their attributes, and sort them based on their attributes.

    Materials:

    1. Large cube/dice with shapes on each side
    2. Set of attribute blocks, or cardboard shapes in different sizes and colors
    3. Resource Sheets 1A & 1B: Titles for Large Sorting Mats, (or use sorting circles, or hula hoops for sorting)

    Activity:

    1. Using chart paper or bulletin board paper, make four Sorting Mats. Glue a different title from Resource Sheet 1 to each of the mats.
    2. Give students an opportunity to roll the cube and find a shape that matches what they rolled.
    3. When the child chooses their matching shape, ask them how they knew.
    4. Then ask them to move it to a mat and continue to roll and choose a shape.
    5. When all shapes have been sorted, identify the attributes of the shapes on each mat

    Guiding Questions:

    1. How many sides does your shape have?
    2. Tell me about the shape you picked.
    3. Where does your shape belong?
    4. What is the same about all of these shapes
