    Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.

    Domain: Geometry

    Unit/Cluster: Identify and describe two-dimensional shapes (circles, triangles, rectangles; including a square which is a special rectangle.)
    Standard(s):
    PK.G.A.1: Match like (congruent and similar) shapes.
    PK.G.A.2: Group the shapes by attributes.

    Purpose/Big Idea:

    1. Students will identify and describe two-dimensional shapes and match similar shapes when given various two-dimensional shapes.
    2. Students will also be able to explain the groupings made when sorting. Students will identify shapes found in their environment.

    Materials:

    1. Shapes, Shapes, Shapes by Tana Hoban (or other shape book with photographs of real objects)
    2. Magazine pages
    3. My Shape Book Pages
    4. Glue
    5. Scissors

    Activity:

    1. Read Shapes, Shapes, Shapes, noting all the real life objects that re various shapes.
    2. After reading, show children one of the pages from a magazine and the My Shape Book pages.
    3. Ask volunteers to find a shape on the page.
    4. Cut the shape out and ask a volunteer to glue it on the page that has a shape that is the same.
    5. Repeat.
    6. Over the course of a few days, allow students to add shapes to their own booklets.
    7. Allow students to share why they sorted the shapes the way they did

    Guiding Questions:

    1. What real world shapes did you find?
    2. Why did you sort the pictures the way that you did?
    3. How are these shapes alike? How are they different?
    4. If I turn this picture like this, does it change the shape?
