    Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.

    Domain: Geometry

    Unit/Cluster: Identify and describe two-dimensional shapes (circles, triangles, rectangles; including a square which is a special rectangle.)
    Standard(s):
    PK.G.A.1: Match like (congruent and similar) shapes.
    PK.G.A.2: Group the shapes by attributes.

    Purpose/Big Idea: Students will identify and describe two-dimensional shapes and identify similar shapes when given various two-dimensional shapes.

    Materials:

    1. The Shape of Things, Julie Lacome (Illustrator) and Dayle Ann Dodds
    2. Baggie filled with pre-cut triangles, squares, rectangles, and circles in varying sizes (1 baggie per student)
    3. White paper, 1 per student
    4. Glue sticks
    5. Markers

    Activity:

    1. Read The Shape of Things to students, noting that each picture is made up of lots of different pictures.
    2. Create a picture, using think aloud to model the procedure.
    3. Label the picture.
    4. Direct students to make their own pictures.
    5. Have students dictate the title of their picture to you.
    6. Allow students to share their pictures with the group for closure

    Guiding Questions:

    1. Are any of your shapes the same?
    2. Pointing to shapes that are the same but different sizes, ask: How are these shapes the same/different?
    3. What shapes did you use to make your picture?
    4. If I turn this picture like this, does it change the shape?
