Prekindergarten: Unit PK.G.A.1-2, Identify and Describe Two-Dimensional Shapes (circles, triangles, rectangles; including a square which is a special rectangle)

Essential Questions: Question

  • How do geometric models describe spatial relationships?
  • How are geometric shapes and objects classified?
  • Where in the real world can I find three-dimensional shapes?
  • How can objects be represented and compared using geometric attributes?
  • How can I put three-dimensional shapes together and take them apart to form other three-dimensional shapes?
  • How can I identify and describe solid figures?
  • How can I compare and contrast two- and three-dimensional shapes?

Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.

    Domain:Geometry
Unit/Cluster: Identify and describe two-dimensional shapes (circles, triangles, rectangles; including a square which is a special rectangle.)
    Standard(s):
PK.G.A.1: Match like (congruent and similar) shapes.
PK.G.A.2: Group the shapes by attributes.

Purpose/Big Idea: Use Students will use geoboards to create shapes that are congruent or similar to a given shape.

    Materials:

    1. Geoboards
    2. Rubber bands
    3. Shape Picture Cards
    4. Virtual Geoboard example,

    Activity:

    1. Use the virtual geoboard to demonstrate making shapes.
    2. Demonstrate using geoboards and rubber bands to create shapes.
    3. Allow students time to explore the geoboards on their own.
    4. Show students the shape picture cards, modeling how you can copy the shape onto the geoboard.
    5. Allow students time to explore the geoboards, using the shape cards to create congruent or similar shapes. Note: students do not need to use the word ‘congruent’ and ‘similar’ when they discuss their shapes

    Guiding Questions:
    For observation:

    1. During exploration, do students create shapes with rubber bands? Are they able to identify the shapes?
    2. Are students able to copy like or congruent shapes?
