Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.

    Domain: PK.MD Measurement and Data

Unit/Cluster:PK.MD.A Describe and compare Measurable Attributes.

Standard(s):PK.MD.A.2: Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common, using words such as longer/shorter, heavier/lighter, or taller/shorter.

Purpose/Big Idea: Use words and gestures to compare big and small bubbles.

    Materials:
    1. bubble liquid
    2. bowl
    3. different types of bubble blowers (with small holes and big holes for blowing through)
    4. optional: pipe cleaners to construct bubble blowers

    Activity:

    Setting: Whole or small group

    1. Read a poem or rhyme about bubbles.
    2. Pretend to blow bubbles with your hands.
    3. Act out a small bubble (expand hands a little) with a gentle blow.
    4. Act out a large bubble (expand hands a lot) with a large blow.
    5. Clap hands together to “pop” the bubbles.

    6. Show children the different bubble blowers.
    7. Ask: “Which one do you think will make the biggest bubbles?”
    8. Ask: “Which one do you think will make the smallest bubbles?”
    9. Use the different blowers to blow bubbles.
    10. Each time, ask the children to make observations about the bubbles. Which ones are bigger? Smaller? Do this several times.
    11. You may want to go outside and allow the children to explore the different bubble blowers themselves.
    12. You can also create bubble blowers for the children with pipe cleaners.

    Extension:
    1. What size bubbles would you expect if we used a hula hoop as a bubble blower?
    2. Could we dip a hula hoop in our bowl?

    Guiding Questions:
    1. Which makes the biggest bubbles?
    2. Which makes the smallest bubbles?
    3. how me with your hands how big that bubble was
