    Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.

    Lesson Plan: 5.NF.B.4 Multiplication of Fractions

    Unit/Cluster: Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.

    5.NF.B.4 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
    a. Interpret the product F1. as a parts of a partition of q into b equal parts; equivalently, as the result of a sequence of operations F2 .

    It is critical that the Standards for Mathematical Practices are incorporated in ALL lesson activities throughout the unit as appropriate. It is not the expectation that all eight Mathematical Practices will be evident in every lesson. The Standards for Mathematical Practices make an excellent framework on which to plan your instruction. Look for the infusion of the Mathematical Practices throughout this unit.

    3.NF.A.1 Understand a fraction F3 as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction F4 as the quantity formed by a parts of size F5
    4.NF.A.1 Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction F6 by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size o the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principal to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
    4.NF.A.2 Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as F7 . Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols <, =, or> and justify the conclusions, e.g. by using a visual fraction model

    Within-Grade Coherence: Content from Other Standards in the Same Grade that Provide

    5.NF.B.4b Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares of appropriate unit fraction side lengths, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. Multiply fractional side lengths to find areas of rectangles, and represent fraction products as rectangular areas.

  • Multiplication of a whole number by a fraction yields a product less than the whole number.
  • Multiplication of a fraction by a fraction yields a product less than either factor.
  • Student Outcomes

    Students will be able to multiply a fraction by a whole number or fraction and interpret the product to show evidence of understanding through multiple representations (i.e. visual model, concrete models, written explanations, equations, etc.)
