UNIT OVERVIEW

Building on their previous work with functions, and on their work with trigonometric ratios and circles in Geometry, students now use the coordinate plane to extend trigonometry to model periodic phenomena.

Essential Questions:

  1. When and how is mathematics used in solving real world problems?
  2. When and how is trigonometry used in solving real world problems?
  3. What characteristics of problems would determine how to model the situation and develop a problem solving strategy?
  4. How is periodic phenomena used to define a trigonometric model?
  5. When and why is it necessary to follow set rules/procedures/properties when manipulating numeric or algebraic expressions?
  6. How are algebraic rules used to verify trigonometric identities?
  7. How are key features of a graph used to interpret trigonometric functions and models?

A question is essential when it stimulates multi-layered inquiry, provokes deep thought and lively discussion, requires students to consider alternatives and justify their reasoning, encourges re-thinking of big ideas, makes meaningful connections with prior learning, and provides students with opportunities to apply problem-solving skills to authentic situations.
