Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.
This lesson, which requires two days to complete during week 2 of the unit, focuses on appreciating the special qualities of others. The teacher will read a story aloud via an interactive read-aloud to engage students in thinking about how they can be kind to others and promote a positive learning environment.
This week we will be talking about "How we care about others." Turn and talk and tell a friend some things that we can do in the classroom, hallway, playground and cafeteria to support each other so that everyone's buckets are full? Then ask for volunteers to share with the whole class.
Tell the class that you will be giving them a plastic cup to represent their bucket. Every time a student exhibits an act of kindness to another or makes a positive choice to support a pleasant classroom environment, they will receive a cotton ball for their bucket. Model how to be a bucket filler by complimenting and helping students. As you do, give a cotton ball to the student receiving the act of kindness and one to yourself as the bucket filler. Have students role play bucket-filling choices in the classroom. Ask students how they feel when someone helps them or says something nice to them. Continue the bucket system as a positive behavior support system. At the end of each day, take time to ask students with full buckets to share a positive experience that helped them have a great day.
Remember to provide time during Week 2 to follow up with the Week 1 puzzle activity. Ask students to introduce themselves to the class and explain the pictures on their puzzle piece. As students finish, add their puzzle piece to the bulletin board classroom puzzle. The title of the bulletin board could be Ms./Mr. ______ Class- We Fit Together Beautifully! Emphasize that the students are a team of bucket fillers that support each other throughout the school day.
