Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.
This lesson, which requires two days to complete, focuses on appreciating the special qualities of oneself. The teacher will read the story on day one for enjoyment and then conduct an interactive read-aloud to engage students in thinking about themselves and the positive qualities they possess.
"This week we have been studying about "How we care about ourselves." Turn and talk and tell a friend some things that make you very special." Then ask for volunteers to share with the whole class.
Tell the class that you will be giving them a piece of paper and that each paper will be shaped differently. Note that each student is special and unique, so each will receive a paper that is special and unique. Pass out puzzle pieces that have the name of each student preprinted on the piece and possibly a picture of the student. Create a model of a puzzle piece with pictures of what makes you special. Share that with the class to give them a visual aid for their assignment. Offer students art supplies and ask them to create a picture to represent a special quality about them. Collect the puzzle pieces at the end of the lesson.
Use the puzzle pieces during Week 2 when you are building a classroom community. Each day, choose 2-4 students to introduce themselves to the class and explain their puzzle piece to the others. As they finish, add the puzzle piece to the bulletin board classroom puzzle. The title of the bulletin board could be Ms./Mr. ______ Class- We Fit Together Beautifully!
