Lesson seeds are ideas that can be used to build a lesson aligned to the CCSS. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. When developing lessons from these seeds, teachers must consider the needs of all learners. It is also important to build checkpoints into the lessons where appropriate formative assessment will inform a teachers instructional pacing and delivery.
This lesson will provide students an opportunity to collectively share their knowledge about communities. During this five-day lesson, students will
construct a collaborative ABC fact book about communities. Teachers will guide students through the writing process and provide opportunities to
use technology during the process and for the finished product. This book will culminate the unit on Communities by having students share their
understanding of "What makes a Community?"
These model lessons feature best practices to address Common Core State Standards. The lesson plans were designed for heterogeneous classes. When teachers implement these plans, they should consider the skills and special needs of their students and make adjustments accordingly.
Apply appropriate elements of UDL:

**Prepare for small group/guided reading by selecting appropriate leveled text and making connections to “Communities” and other topics related to this theme.
What makes a community?
Begin to write the ABC book. Create a page of the book as a model in front of students as you. Use the alpha-box poster of "Community"
terms that was created throughout the unit. These words can be used as the topic for each page of the class ABC book.
Day 5: Publishing
Think about a variety of publishing options. The use of many technology tools can enhance the writing experience. See the following
blog for suggestions for technology integration with publishing.
