In response to Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Frederick Douglass declared:

“There are certain great national acts, which by their relation to universal principles, properly belong to the whole human family, and Abraham Lincoln’s Proclamation of the 1st of January, 1863, is one of these acts. Henceforth shall that day take rank with the Fourth of July.”

-Describe the most important provisions of the Emancipation Proclamation.
-Based on this description, and your knowledge of early American history, do you agree with Douglass’s statement? Provide details and examples to defend your position.
