Standard 1.0 Political Science

Topic A. The Foundations and Function of Government

Indicator 1. Investigate the evolution of the U.S. political system as expressed in the United States Constitution

Objective a. Compare the confederate form of government under the Articles of Confederation with the federal form under the Constitution

Use this activity to help students grasp the differences in the relationships between the states and national government under confederate and federal systems of government. Using a Jigsaw style activity, divide the class into two groups (confederate form of government and federal form of government.) Provide each group with informational text and/or primary source documents about their topic. After they have read the text, ask them to create graphic representations of the relationships. Direct students to create charts, diagrams, or political cartoons, that explain the relationships among the state governments, central government, and foreign governments under the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. Using their visual representations, students will inform the students from the other groups about their topic.
