Topic B. Emergence, Expansion and Changes in Nations and Empires

Indicator 2. Analyze the growth and development of colonial America

Objective b. Compare the political, economic and social lives of people in New England, Middle and the Southern colonies

Through this lesson, students will learn to draw generalizations based on research. Assign a pair or trio of students to research each of the original thirteen colonies in order to fill in a worksheet. The worksheet should ask students for information about their colony, such as: the founder, the year of founding, the original purpose/goal for the colony, climate, geography, types of farming, other economic activities, ethnicities of colonists, the primary religion(s) of the colonists, presence of communities, use of enslaved African labor, etc. After students have completed their worksheets, group together students who researched the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies and have them share the information they gathered about each of their colonies. The group should focus on similarities among their colonies to write a general description of the colonies in their region.
