Topic B. Emergence, Expansion and Changes in Nations and Empires

Indicator 2. Analyze the growth and development of colonial America

Objective a. Describe the religious, political and economic motives of individuals who migrated to North America and the difficulties they encountered

Working individually, in pairs, or in small groups, have students select a colony and conduct research to determine the principal economic, religious and/or political reasons why settlers came to that colony. Using this information, students should create an advertisement to attract new settlers to their colony. Suggest that students should think about the type of people who would be attracted to the colony (religious families, poor single men, etc) and tailor their ad to that audience.

Students should assume the identity of a colonist from one of the thirteen original colonies and write a letter to family back home that expresses the colonist's motives for coming to the colony, the hardships they have faced since arriving in the colony, an assessment of whether their goals for migrating were met, and their conclusion as to whether their journey was worth the hardships.
