Standard 5.0 History

Topic A. Individuals and Societies Change Over Time

Indicator 2. Analyze the chronology and the significance of key historical events leading to early settlements in Colonial America

Objective b. Analyze how key historical events impacted Native American societies

Have students compare the lifestyles and cultures of English colonists at Jamestown with the Powhatan people by filling in a chart with columns for each group and rows labeled with such headings as "clothing," "religion," "beliefs about land ownership," "roles of men and women," etc. Next, ask students to consider how cultural differences and key historical events (Roanoke and Jamestown settlements), might have affected relations between the Powhatans and English. Have students write a paragraph from the perspective of a Powhatan Indian describing his/her thoughts about the English colonists and reaction to discovering that the English plan to stay in Jamestown permanently.
