Standard 5.0 History

Topic A. Individuals and Societies Change Over Time

Indicator 1. Analyze the chronology and significance of key historical events during the age of European exploration

Objective a. Describe the origin, destination and goals of the North American explorers

After researching one of the European explorers referenced in the clarifying example, students should assume the identity of their explorer and write a memoir that describes his voyage(s) of discovery. Students should include in their account their explorer's reasons for embarking on the voyage, the voyage's supporters and/or funders, his intended destination, the actual path of the voyage, any notable occurrences during the trip, and the results of the exploration.

After learning about the European explorers, students should pretend that they are a European king and write a "Help Wanted" ad designed to recruit an explorer for a new expedition. In their ad, students should include the character traits and previous experience/training they are seeking in an explorer, a description of the voyage's intended destination and goals, and a list of the sorts of duties for which the explorer will be responsible.
