Topic A. Individuals and Societies Change Over Time

Indicator 2. Compare Native American societies in Maryland before and after European colonization

Objective a. Identify the development of indigenous societies from the Pale-Indians to the Woodland Indians

Working individually or in pairs, have students create dioramas or posters representing the Paleo-Indians, Archaic Indians, and Woodland Indians. Tell students to select one of the three time periods to work on but not to tell their fellow students which period they have chosen. The dioramas or posters should include details about the Indians' food, shelter, tools, as well as plant and animal life in the area during the chosen period. Upon completion, have students share their work with the rest of the class, and have classmates determine which time period each student's work represents. Display the students' dioramas or posters around the classroom, grouped according to time period.
