Standard 5.0 History

Topic B. Emergence, Expansion and Changes in Nations and Empires

Indicator 1. Analyze the growth and the development of the United States

Objective b. Evaluate Manifest Destiny and its impact on territorial expansion of the nation

Manifest Destiny, the idea that the United States was fated to occupy the entire North American continent and expand its borders to the Pacific Ocean, was the philosophical foundation for westward expansion. Many Americans believed that their nation was exceptional in the history of the world and that the unrestrained extension of American democracy and freedom was both just and ordained by God. Expansion brought important economic and social benefits to the United States, but it also had important consequences for other people and nations occupying the western portions of North America, including Native Americans, Mexicans, and the British. Each of these perspectives must be considered when evaluating Manifest Destiny.
